Reinhard F. Sachsenhofer is Head of Petroleum Geology at Montanuniversitaet Leoben. Previously, he was visiting professor at the Donetsk National Technical University, Ukraine. He is also an honorary guest professor at Jilin University, China, and editorial board member of several international journals. His main research interests lie in basin analysis, conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon systems, coal geology, and organic petrology. Current research topics include Oligocene (“Maikopian”) source rocks and petroleum systems in the Paratethys area (Central Europe, Black Sea, Caucasus, Caspian Sea), as well as the development of improved techniques for oil-source correlation.

David Misch received his PhD on “Conventional and Unconventional Petroleum Systems in the Ukrainian Dniepr-Donets-Basin” in 2016. His current research focuses on the integration of advanced geochemical and image-based analysis tools in shale geology, emphasizing the role of organic matter in porosity development during diagenesis. His further expertise includes organic geochemical tools for oil/gas-source-correlation, organic petrography, as well as reservoir geology. In 2017, he worked as an invited postdoctoral researcher at the Chair for Structural Geology, Tectonics and Geomechanics (GED), RWTH Aachen.

Achim Bechtel works as a senior scientist specialized in organic and stable isotope geochemistry. He is responsible for GC-MS analyses and the measurement of stable isotope composition of C, H, and O in organic matter, carbonates, and specific lipids (compound-specific isotope analysis). His research interests lie in the fields of biomarker composition of land plant-derived organic matter (lignite, wood, coal), as well as the reconstruction of paleo-environmental conditions of potential hydrocarbon source rocks.

Dr. Doris Groß completed her PhD in 2009 on basin evolution and deposition of coal and organic-rich sediments in the Lavanttal Basin. In 2017, she finished her habilitation at Montanuniversitaet Leoben on petroleum systems of Austria, England, Ukraine and Japan. During this time, she joined an expedition on DV Chikyu offshore Japan investigatin the deep coalbed biosphere. In addition, she was a guest researcher at the GFZ Potsdam.
Dr. Groß is now working as an Associate Professor at the Chair of Petroleum Geology. Amongst others, her research focuses on projects dealing with organic-petrographic, geochemical and nanostructural investigations of coals and source rocks, and seal rock integrity, including oil-source correlation using organic geochemistry and isotopy. Additionally she investigates deep ground water flow and possible interactions with stratigraphic younger ground water and hydrocarbon reservoirs in Upper Austria and Bavaria.
She is currently giving lectures in sedimentology, reservoir rocks, geological modelling, core description as well as lab works for general geology and sedimentology.

Günter Nobis holds a position as lab technician since 2018 and has formerly worked in various fields of the chemical industry, as well as on the development of medical devices. He is in charge of the organic-geochemical labs, as well as the sample archive and database. His tasks include the preparation of solid, liquid and gaseous samples, the execution of GC-MS analyses and student training on geochemical lab equipment.

Franz Seidl holds a position as lab technician and is mainly responsible for X-ray diffractometry, as well as sample preparation for various analytical techniques. He is furthermore responsible for work safety and first aid.

Stephen Ajuaba is a Ph.D. student from Cameroon and works on “ Enhanced oil-source correlation using biomarkers and compound-specific isotopes". His work covers the application of various geochemical and petrographic techniques for the analysis of the molecular and isotopic composition of oil and rock extracts, as well as the characterization of organic matter in rocks. Previously, he gained work experience in sedimentary geology during his M.Sc. project in Italy and Spain (2018) and in organic geochemistry during his post-graduate traineeship at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben.
Fikri, Hafidz Noor, MSc
Hafidz Noor Fikri is a visiting Ph.D. student from Indonesia and works on "Depositional environments and coal characteristics in the Warukin and Tanjung formations, Indonesia". This research project targets the geological evolution of Kalimantan and SE Asia during Tertiary time. In addition, the prediction of coal properties based on statistical methods should promote optimized utilization in the local coal mining industry.
Rauball, Johannes, MSc
Johannes Rauball is a PhD student focusing on the petroleum potential of organic-rich sediments in the Ukrainian Carpathians, in particular on the Oligocene-Miocene Menilite Formation, the Lower Cretaceous Shypot Formation and the Middle Jurassic rocks of the Mesozoic basement. As part of his PhD, Johannes has published his work on the Menilite Formation in the Journal of Petroleum Geology and is in the process of publishing his remaining works on the Shypot Formation and Middle Jurassic rocks.
Steiner, Timotheus, Dipl.-Ing
Timotheus Steiner completed his MSc on a molybdenum deposit in the Hohe Tauern (Austria) in 2018, and subsequently started his PhD work on "Mesozoic karst bauxites in the Eastern Alps and the Dinarides: genesis, age and Rare Earth Element potential". While he is familiar with methods of igneous petrology, field geology in high alpine terrain, sedimentology, and micropaleontology, his present work focuses on carbonates, bauxites, and heavy mineral/component analysis. Furthermore, he gained work experience in exploration geology during previous projects.
Vranjes-Wessely, Sanja, MSc

Sanja Vranjes-Wessely is a pre-doctoral researcher in the project "Geomat", an interdisciplinary project of the chairs of petroleum geology and materials physics. Her main research focus is the nano-structural and mechanical characterization via nanoindentation of coals and organic-matter-rich rocks. Sanja combines various high resolution imaging techniques such as TEM, BIB-SEM and AFM with physical adsorption techniques to obtain a comprehensive understanding of pore space evolution in organic matter.
